SKATE SHARPENING:THE UNDISPUTED HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION OF SHARPENING

Sharpening makes the player & can break the player. There are 7 distinct degrees of sharpness which, if done correctly, are all different at ice time. As a player, you should find the hollow (degree of sharpness) that allows you to best cut the ice without slowing you down and a radius that will offer you quick blade transition without limiting your agility. Often, players assume its all the same when they have their skates sharpened by their local hockey store or rink sharpener. Find the custom grind that fits your game best, request it continually and live by it. Its the single most important aspect of getting stronger on your skates and enjoying your ice time.
The basis of skate sharpening is 'radius of a circle'. A circle that measures 1 inch across has a flattter curve as compared to a 1/2 inch wide circle. This curve is the ' hollow ' across the width of the skate blade. A 3/8 hollow has a deep curve, thus the hollow on the skate blade is extreme, which grabs the ice substantially more than a flatter 5/8 hollow. While it sounds easy, actually getting skated handed back to you that are exact, specific and perfect is not common.
